My gums are too big because i didn't take good care of my teeth.what will make my gums normal size?
First, make an appointment to have your teeth cleaned. Your gums are most likely swollen because of the bacteria that is being allowed to breed around them.

When you get your teeth cleaned, ask your hygienist if she has a "prophy jet." It is an instrument that she can use to clean your teeth that is sort of like a 'sandblaster' for your teeth. Don't worry. It's not painful... just a little messy. :) This is a great instrument for cleaning around braces and getting rid of bacteria-produced plaque.

Afterwards, ask her if she has any 'floss threaders.' If not, go to your local drug store and purchase some. These will help you get your floss under your braces so that you can actually floss. Or, you can use what is called 'super floss,' which is a floss with 3 sections: a stiff section for feeding the floss under your braces, a regular floss section, and a fuzzy-tufty section to clean out any gaps you may have.

Although it may take you 5 minutes, you REALLY, REALLY need to floss while you have braces. Normally, you have plenty of places in your mouth and under your gums where bacteria can breed... but when you have braces, you increase the places for bacteria to sit.

I promise that if you start flossing, the swelling in your gums will go down. You don't need any surgery... you just need to floss.
Reply:Ask your dentist about getting your gums shaved. What i mean by that is he numbs you up and remove a layer of your gums. Have to wait till you get your braces removed though.
Reply:go to a dentist ask him to help you!
Reply:Do you take any medications to treat seizure disorder? Some medications can give you hyperplasia of the gum tissue. Or maybe you are talking about swelling from gingavitis. Floss is the only way to take care of this. Floss floss floss or you will lose all your teeth.
Reply:Flossing.
Reply:OK...Time to go and see a doctor. first of all "stop" eating so much sweets. Brush before you go to bed. Chew some gum after you eat sweets. ( Sugarless of course) Do all that and your teeth will last 80 years or more.
Reply:Gums are remarkably resilient. Start brushing regularily, flossing and using mouth wash (if you feel it is necessary) and you will see improvements very quickly.
Reply:Flossing every day can help, and another thing that can really help too is a good electric toothbrush (like a Sonicare). My gums got much healthier after I started using one. Flossing with braces sucks, but it will make your gums a lot healthier
Reply:LISTERINE!!! hurry, omg you have braces, you know how much money your wasting your parents tut tut tut shame
Reply:What I understand is that you do not have any gum disease. You are only looking for cosmetic solution for your gum. You may consult a periodontist for gum contouring procedure after which they will be more esthetic.
Reply:hey i have braces and a simular problem i think

the orthodontist said that once i get my braces off i might need surgery 2 reduce the gum size if they dont reduce size naturally

mayb im having that shaving thing done that someone mentioned, hope not it sounds painful
Reply:Your gums are too big because they are inflamed or swollen. You must work really hard at eliminating the plaque in your mouth and brush really thoroughly. The plaque that is being trapped between your braces is causing your gums to get irritated and swollen this is called gingivitis. You must get reg 3-4 month cleanings and discuss using a rubber tip stimulator with your dentist. this little divise will help the swelling go down and help firm the gums. Also i would watch your breathing habits and make sure you are not breathing through your mouth. People with braces tend to mouth breath and this irritates the gum tissue and causes gum inflamation. The shifting of the teeth can also cause bulging of the gums, also certain medications such as dilatin.IF the gums still are bulgy after all attempts and once your braces are off you may require gum contouring surgery...dont worry thats the last resort.
