Sandra Bernhard
Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
Completely original performer whose in-your-face approach to comedy is offputting but frequently rewarding. Gaptoothed, with frizzy hair, the striking but unattractive Bernhard won't be tapped to play conventional leads, it's safe to say. She worked as a Beverly Hills manicurist in the 1970s to supplant her budding career as a stand-up comic, and, following a less-than-memorable debut in Cheech %26amp; Chong's Nice Dreams (1981), stunned moviegoers with a riveting performance as a psychotic fan in The King of Comedy (1983). She has since appeared in Follow That Bird (1985), Track 29 (1988), and the critically acclaimed Without You I'm Nothing (1990), a film version of her thought-provoking, one-woman show about modern pop culture. She was one of the few bright spots in Hudson Hawk (1991), playing the wacky wife of equally amusing Richard E. Grant. She has a recurring role as an openly gay character on TV's "Roseanne," and appeared in Inside Monkey Zetterland (1993). She has also written two books featuring her distinctive humor.
