BIG QUESTION about wisdom teeth?

if once you get them cut out and your recovering from the surgery.. how do you tell if they got infected? please help

BIG QUESTION about wisdom teeth?
fever and swelling ----%26gt; mine got infected: I had a low grade fever (about 100 F) and my mouth swelled up . . . . it looked like I had the mumps - funny now - painful then.

Good Luck
Reply:they're very painful, and the swelling won't go down.
Reply:If you aren't taking your antibiotics you are at a big risk for getting infected. I had mine out 2 months ago and they got infected...my mouth tasted weird and smelled nasty. Take the antibiotics and rinse your mouth with salt water after every meal possible!
Reply:They will hurt. Pus will leak out. Your oral surgeon will prescribe an antibiotic like amoxicillin at your one week follow up.
Reply:Swelling and tenderness -- although the surgery trauma itself will cause some of that. The clearest symptom of infection is a fever. Most of all, though, call your oral surgeon's office and discuss things with them. They know just what they did, and can ask you some specific leading questions.
Reply:Signs of infection are discharge of a yellow or greenish color. Severe pain in the surgery or jaw area. There could also be a good amount of swelling, more than what there was when they first did the surgery. Large amounts of blood, not just the little bit that is expected during the draining process. You should not drink from a straw or smoke a cigarette for AT LEAST 24 hours after your surgery as it can cause a "dry socket". If you have one of those I can only explain the pain as being so bad it makes you want to pound your head off of the floor! If you suspect infection you should go to the ER ASAP, as tooth infection can lead to death! Do not hesitate to have it checked, it can be treate with antibotics.
Reply:If they hurt really bad. Call the place where you got them pulled and speak with the advice nurse and try to get a same-day apointment. You might have dry sockets which means the blood clot (one is supposed to form) isn't forming. More on dry sockets:

I had dry sockets when my teeth were pulled related to throwing up too much from my pain medication...I had to go in everyday and have my sockets stuffed w/ gauze--so much fun, I know.

Seriously though, call your doc tomarrow morning--FIRST THING and get in there to make sure everything is healing properly.

Lastly, here is some more info on how to tell if you are healing properly:

Good luck!
Reply:sustained swelling - your cheek will get big. Pain that does not diminish or gets worse. Possibly low grade fever
Reply:I ran a fever and gums were sore. the idiot Dr. left gauze on one side and it hurt like h****. Hope you have a decent dentist.
Reply:There is a lot of swelling and pain. Call your dentist ASAP. Mine told me to take Extra strength Advil until I could see him. Good luck!
