pictures of healthy and unhealthy rat teeth. Please don't try trimming them on your own though, you could split the teeth and hurt the rat.

Rats naturally keep their teeth trimmed down by grinding them together, but providing things to chew on entertains them as well as letting them get mouth exercise, because in nature they'll chew on things all the time.

If you think your rats teeth are too long, look into getting them trimmed by a vet or at an experienced rat breeder.
Reply:I can't really help you decide whether or not his teeth are too long because I can't actually see your rat, but usually just feeding him crunchy food blocks or giving him something like wood chews or an edible house will keep his teeth down to the length they should be. You rarely need to cut a rat's teeth for them, unless they are sick or old.
Reply:well you should feed him hard food like chew sticks or veggies that is what i know because i have had a very bad experience.
Reply:You can get these little blocks at Petco Or Petsmart and they are made out of wood like these things

Reply:I have had four rats, two now and two in the past. Sometimes you will get a rat with teeth that just do not grow right. This is not fatal, but does require veterinary attention, they will cut the teeth back just like with a cat's nails. Look up and call an exotics vet for this one, because mouth trouble left untreated IS serious.
Reply:Wooden chew sticks and fresh, crunchy veggies are the best way to wear down your new friends teeth!
